This project was created for the Abu Dhabi Festival 2019 Poster Design Competition by the Abu Dhabi Music & Arts Foundation. The challenge was to create a poster in line with the Special Olympics World Games which will be hosted in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates in March 2019.
The Special Olympics World Games 2019 will be hosted for the first time in the Middle East North Africa since the movement’s founding over 50 years ago. The Special Olympics is the world’s largest humanitarian sporting event and a global movement which focuses on the empowerment of People of Determination with intellectual disabilities through the power of sport. Over 7,000 athletes from over 170 countries will be coming to compete in a series of sports, as well as a variety of initiatives and activities held across the seven Emirates.
The concept is simple. As these particular athletes are different from the regular ones because of their intellectual disabilities, I wanted to represent their mental challenges by having a head on the key visual. I also wanted to focus on how, in spite of their obstacles, they manage to THRIVE and be successful as athletes.
