Kids Patchwork Backpack

Initially, I had made a patchwork quilt from second hand shirts. However, despite my experience with sewing, this was my first time quilting and I found perfecting the technique far more difficult then I had planned. I had finished the quilt however, it was not to my standard. I wanted to submit work of higher quality; showcasing greater attention to detail. For this reason, I cut it up and re-made the patchwork quilt into a kids, patchwork backpack.

I was anxious to create the backpack because I knew once I cut up the patchwork design, there was no room for error. I knew that I would have to think through the entire design process, from start to finish, to ensure that the design was achievable.
The patchwork kids backpack is not perfect, but it is just as I had envisioned. The functional yet decorative design uses a variety of pinks, in contrast with dark purple and orange to create a complimentary, design which re-purposes unwanted textiles. Additionally, this backpack is durable and safe, which makes it ideal for a child who may be living rough.

This is a digital adaption of the original design. The mosaic effect beautifully depicts the vibrancy and contrast present throughout the image. I like how, from a distance, the image almost appears the same as the original, with each tile blending together. The chaotic design asks the viewer to not observe the image from a ‘middle ground’ but rather up-close or from far away.
