Transformation & Illumination

Module 3: Transformation & Illumination
Pictured is my third and last studio project for the semester of first year experience at NC State. The challenge of this project was to create something that showed the two elements of transformation and illumination. The guide lines of this project were extremely broad so one could create anything they desired. I ended up basically making a "spikey triangle". To further break this down that convoluted phrase, I created the transformation (or movement) through triangular prisms made out of reflective paper. These prisms were them placed on a triangle frame that had a spandex based material spread across it. I then placed three prisms that were see through that had either a red, blue, or green light bulb in it. The colors red, blue, and green are the additive primary colors of light, so when crossed they make all sorts of color combos. Next, I placed an oblong piece of wood attached to a motor behind the fabric, which when turned on made the prisms jut out rhythmically in an obscure way. When the prisms moved with the fabric, the lights cast different shadows which showed the illumination aspect. This project ended up being very complicated and hard to execute, but I was very happy with the end result and interesting concept I had decided to stick with.
