This is an egg tempera painting I had started while I studied abroad in Florence. It is a reinterpretation of a painting of Mary by Nicolo Barabino found at the Museo dell Opera del Duomo. I began by sketching in my moleskine with gouache and redrawing it on a cradle board with traditional rabbit skin glue and powdered marble gesso. Finding a renaissance painting with both Jewish and Christian icons really drew me to want to reinterpret the piece. The final is 8 x 10 egg tempera painted with Kolinsky brushes.
