Working with Eugene's master plan for redevelopment of the riverfront area, this public transit hub facilitates interaction between the new commercial development along the river, the residential area to the north, and the thriving restaurants of 5th Street. An alley is carved out behind the structure to allow the transit center to stand out among the surrounding buildings, and providing a separate space for the bus the arrive and depart, without disrupting the paths of pedestrians or cars.
The heavier elements of the program, including the restrooms, baggage area, and ticket offices are arranged along the bus alley and act as a heavy structure for the soaring roof panes to rise off of as they reach the street and provide shelter for nearby pedestrians. The long wall along 5th street encourages interaction between the users of the building and the surrounding neighborhood by eliminating boundaries and merging the indoor and outdoor space.
At the busy corner of 5th and High the main building is set back, while the ticket office is pulled forward creating a sunny square at the center of the district. A ticket window reaches the street allowing people to get information about the city of Eugene and purchase tickets, and allows frequent riders to bypass the windows and enter straight into the building. The bus area in the back is combined with the train area creating a communal waiting area and bringing all the transit options together.
