Elementi Magazine No 14 - Mars on Earth Illustration

Elements are bi-monthly 108 pages of leading science promoting magazine. Developed based on the awarded popular science portal Elementarium, Elements magazine is visually impressive, designed according to modern aesthetic trends. Original illustrations by the local artists make this magazine extraordinary and unique in the region.

The story I've illustrated is about NASA’s failed experiment at Mauna Loa Volcano and their electrified habitat (simulation of Mars). You can read more about the experiment at https://hi-seas.org/  and more about what went wrong here. Super cool thing is that there is also a podcast about life at habitat.  👩🏼‍🚀💥

Text: Ivana Nikolić AD: Ivan Umeljić

Character is positioned like she’s leaving the story (the page) because in the article she gave up on the mission. Gradient is used to present electrified habitat. Subtle geometric illustrations in the background are showing the experimental side of the story, calculations and research.
It’s the first time that I’m using this illustration style because I still really want to experiment with all those digital tools. First, I used Adobe Illustrator for vectors and then application ProCreate together with Apple pencil for creating the textures and noise.

Here’s how I started. Always sketch first, then line then shapes, colors and textures in the end.
THANK YOU FOR WATCHING!
