During the year I studied in Indonesia I had to realize that locals doesn’t like dark nights. Moreover they are in general afraid in the dark no matter to which community they belong. Unlike them I was fascinated by the night on the island I lived, as the night is not as dark like in Europe. Shadows are smooth and calming, and man can walk easily on the fields without any kind of supporting light at night. But walking around at night is an experience that locals fear, and avoid to live through.

To capture the beauty of tropical nights, I started to collect and draw the shadows directly on to a big piece of textile. Later I dyed the textile with a traditional multilayer batique technique, using the outlines of the collected shadow forms, which were transformed to new shapes by the manual technique as well.
