Meadowlark

A resplendent silver Vega
belies verdant grasslands
slumbering beneath a quilt
of shimmering morning dew.

The anchored nest rests
inside a bovine hoofprint
lined with sedge grass and
pliant stems.

Alone, his solar underparts
and speckled brown back
awaken native legends
of friendship and peace.

Chaucer and Shakespeare
hark the lark as heralds of
new lives marked in hours
through warbling and gurgling
songs awakening

throats of lionhearted warriors
and lonely poets - pushing them
to take flight and suck in the
splendor of a spangled morn.
