Maybelline | Lipstick Under My Burkha

Maybelline - Lipstick under my burkha.

In 2017, the Censor Board of India banned the film, Lipstick Under My Burkha, from releasing in India. And their justification for doing so was this:
“The story is lady-oriented, and about their fantasies above life. There are continuous sexual scenes, abusive words, audio pornography and could hurt the sentiments of a certain community.”

Whereas, the film was actually about the liberation of 4 women from the shackles of patriarchy. Exactly the kind of behavior exemplified by the Censor Board by imposing the ban in the first place.

Overnight, Lipstick Under My Burkha became more than just a film. It transformed into a symbol. A symbol against all things patriarchal, a symbol against censorship and a symbol for women-empowerment. Well, the ban prevented the film from being screened in public. But it didn’t say anything about private screenings.

So, we thought of this campaign for Maybelline India, in a tie-up with the producers of the film, Prakash Jha productions. Maybelline is a women’s cosmetics brand that stands for strong, independent and powerful women.
