The Weissenhof Estate is an experimental neighborhood built for the Deutscher Werkbund exhibition in Stuttgart in 1927. Some of the most important European modernist architects and artists took part to the project, under the artistic direction of Mies Van der Rohe. The exhibition “Abitare la Weissenhofsiedlung di Stoccarda”, that took place in Rome during May and June 2018 in the Goethe-Institut, shows the results of a deep job of historical research and interpretation that began in October 2017. The research work, developed by 4 indipendent groups, was centered upon the study of some of the Weissenhofsiedlung historical buildings and their organization, positioning and expressiveness.
The visual identity of the Weissenhofsieslung is recognizable from it’s white or monocolour walls, but this medium, said Richard Lisker, artist and artisan, “is limited within itself, for it represents only a tiny fraction of the possibilities that an animated surface can offer.” “Today’s man needs both maximum quietness and strong emotions”, said Willi Baumeister, graphic designer and visual artist.
Today, 90 years later, a group of young artists interprets the spirit and intentions of these two different voices, by means of which a new expressive language is born, with what seem to be infinite possibilities..
