UCLA South Campus - Analysis, Planning and Design

The area planning and programming was critical to establishing the infrastructure improvement for the UCLA Campus and the establishment of a Campus order for the expansion and growth of engineering, chemistry, biology and medical sciences research. The 10 acre area was bordered by the UCLA Medical Center and Schools of Medicine and Dentistry (CHS). The plan was organized with a utility service corridor between the CHS and the South Campus and the establishment of an accessible series of courtyards and walkways from the gateway axis up to the Court of Sciences allowing for a grade separation between the services and pedestrian circulation linking the research areas. The master plan identified and set design criteria for the Medical Research Laboratories, Molecular Nuerosciences Research Center, Chemistry-Biosciences Research Center, Molecular Imaging Center and the UCLA Chiller Cogeneration Facility.

The co-gen project provides electrical power and steam for the entire Campus and chilled water for the science and research facilities and UCLA Medical Center. The Chilled water loop design and implementation was optimized to reorder and upgrade the southern portion of the UCLA Campus utility infrastructure. The Chiller Cogeneration facility was planned for the western half of the south Campus (not shown on plan).
