Museum of Nuclear Energy

Museum of Nuclear Energy
Creative Conception for the competition
In 2017 we were briefed with the concept of the museum and asked to take part in the open exhibition design competition. We have started our work from vast scientific research that  developed
into a preliminary creative conception of a Museum of Nuclear Energy. The museum would be located
in a newly built pavilion on the territory of Moscow’s Exhibition of Achievements of National Economy (VDNKh). According to the client’s project, the museum space should be divided into three main parts. The starting point of the visitors’ route as well as the final one were rather obvious: a historical zone dedicated to the Soviet research in the field of nuclear energy and a zone devoted to the current state
of affairs, innovations and achievements of the modern nuclear industry. We faced a challenge
to elaborate design and content that would tie these two chapters together.

Upon our scientific and historical research we have decided to focus on 4 topics of the permanent importance: fundamental physical principles; nuclear accidents and disasters; nuclear safety and security; peaceful nuclear technologies.
Microscopic realm and radiation
Immersive multimedia installation with dome projection and multi-channel sound explains fundamental principles concerning the nature of nuclear reactions in order to dispel myths about radiation.

Nuclear Engine
Large-scale installations depict legends and utopias of the 20th centuries and accurately model
a nuclear-powered icebreaker “50 Years of Victory” and a nuclear submarine with AR/ VR/ multimedia solutions explaining the subject. Integrated in the exhibition space interactive panels also present
some other nuclear powered means of transport that both took place and stayed fiction or never went
into production, such as nuclear-powered cars, airplanes and tractors.

History of Nuclear Disasters
Archive of the world nuclear disasters combines interactive, tactile and multimedia elements, while scale model of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant with augmented reality demonstrates cleanup measures.
It is supplemented with installation Security Circuit that depicts current state of affairs in regard
of the modern nuclear security protocols and measures aimed to prevent such disasters
as Chernobyl catastrophe in the future.

Nuclear Security and International Relations
Multimedia installation is dedicated to non-proliferation and nuclear deterrence policies, as well as nuclear safety strategies. The zone also includes impressive installation “Judgement Day Clock”.
