Gambeeram Indian Take-out

The goal of this university project was to create a more environmentally sustainable take-out packaging system for a restaurant which was lacking one. My jumping off point for this project was the traditional Indian "tiffin" - a stackable metal lunch pail which is used to pack lunches. There is an enormous industry dedicated to the delivery of home-cooked meals in tiffins by bicycle messengers to workplaces every day; when the customer is finished the delivery boys pickup the tiffins, wash, rinse, & repeat.

The packaging concept consists of a recyclable cardboard box with natural ink screen printed labels, which also acts as a placemat for your meal once opened; a perforated business card is integrated into the box-top. Inside is a small cardboard tray for bread and utensils. An actual metal tiffin is used, and returned by the customer for a cash deposit or discount off their next meal. The logotype mirrors the look of Malayalam, a language spoken predominantly in Southern India.
