OVERVIEW
The Holy Cross Community Center and Theatre is located on the grounds of the previous Holy Cross School. The site lies comfortably between the banks of the Mississippi River and the Lower Ninth Ward.
The project is based on making the building a literal connection between the river and the neighborhood. Both elements are integral parts of New Orleans history and culture. The proposed center would allow residents to signify their unique and important location.
SITE+CONTEXT
The proposed design for the Holy Cross Community Center draws inspiration from the vernacular architecture of the region, in particular, the Mississippi River delta. In an area that suffered complete destruction during Hurricane Katrina, the community center aims to reconnect a neighborhood and provide its citizens with an appropriate and engaging building.
BUILDING PLANNING
Given the nature of building in New Orleans, the program was divided to allow main functions to reside on the ground floor, while providing meeting spaces and classrooms on the second floor which when needed can serve as areas of refuge in the event of inclement weather. The two pieces of the program are divided by a service mezzanine that conditions and recirculates wastewater in the building and on the site. In coordination with green roofs and photovoltaic panels, the building can operate completely independent of the grid–– providing the community with a safe and adaptable center.
