Alphabet Project, College Project

For this project, we had to create an alphabet from several word choices, I chose the word 'cryptic promenade'.

My original idea was to have letters chopped up and formed out of planks of wood, resembling both letters, promenade (seaside) & cryptic (negative spaces).
I decided to change my approach after thinking that planks of wood wouldn’t be sideways. The additional difficulty was that some letters were entirely different from others and resembled two separate alphabets.

After creating my alphabet, I was informed of the work of Paul Rand and his IBM logo. For this alphabet, I combined two simple ideas, white and blue (you will find these colours everywhere on a beach or promenade) and missing pieces. So by using these ideas, I created a simple square and lined up white and blue rectangles. I then made letters out of them. Then I used a gradient to make the alphabet less blocky and more natural and look like water.
