Lit in Colour is a campaign led by Penguin Books, one of the largest publishers in the world, and the Runnymede Trust, the UK’s leading race equality think tank, to support schools in making the teaching and learning of English literature more inclusive.

As part of the campaign, a team of academics were commissioned to carry out research to understand the issues around the lack of diversity in the English literature curriculum and the recommendations for how to change it for the better.

With the 68 page report being a dense and difficult read, custom illustrations, creative design and hand drawn typography were used to bring the report to life. Designed to expand on the Lit in Colour brand, the naive illustrations were used at every touch point of the campaign to highlight the stark findings of the report.

On publication of the report and supporting assets, conversations were sparked throughout the industry, with publishers working with exam boards to add inclusive titles to the curriculum set texts, providing free teaching resources and a collaboration between publishers and expert partners to continue the change.
