ITALIAN SERIES

This series is, in essence, my impressions of the Italian Riviera during winter.  Gone are the summer tourists and the bustle they bring, and into their place has settled an unhurried equilibrium.  The occasional solitary passer-by, the gray sun on an old wall, and a gentle cloak of tranquility restore life’s balance.

These series were made at home based on impressions and sketches I made when I was in Italy. The sketch I usually make quickly, with no unnecessary details. My goal is to reproduce the first impression that strikes my eye. First impression strikes immediately, providing minimum information. A road sign. A window opening. A sea sparkle. The clear-cut silhouette of a tree. The play of the light and shade. A passing glance fixes attention on a moment; on a moment in which eternity imprints itself.

I want to express the depth of the moment using a minimum of media. The target of the sketch is to express an instantaneous impression.  When I’m making a sketch, I have in my disposal only a small sketch book and pencil. This allows me to make short, quick lines and shapes. At home I use brush, ink and watercolor paint, which permit me to make these lines and shapes thicker and bigger.  I love to work with ink and watercolor. Their washes splendidly convey a sensation of TRANQUILITY and ETERNITY, which are very important to me.
