The Highs and Lows – Infographics
Information Design, Illustration, Graphic Design

As part of a school assignment, we were tasked to design an infographic poster on a chosen invention. We had to research on an invention from one of the three topics – medical equipments, local delicacies or musical instruments, and had to use at least two infographic frameworks (spatial, chronological or quantitative) to present and layout our information visually.

After researching, I chose to do an infographic poster about the Octobass, the largest and lowest string instrument in the world. I only found out about the instrument while I was researching and I was intrigued and amazed by its huge size – it is more than twice the size of the average human!. I also found out that some notes it produces actually fall outside the range of human hearing – thus only vibrations can be felt!

Therefore, I decided to focused on its huge size and its low sound as I felt that it was something unique to the Octobass. Using the spatial and quantitative framework, I compared the size of the Octobass to the size of a human and a violin to really show the contrast and compared the wavelength to show the low pitch.

An infographic poster about the Octobass, a string instrument almost too big to play and too low to hear.
