Moxie Ignite is a personal project by industrial designer Kenneth Macalino. It is an emergency flint strike lighter with a bladed edge that can create tinder to ignite. The flint and bladed strike piece insert into each other, protecting the blade from weathering while allowing the lighter to compact into an easy-to-carry design. The product is designed as a last resort to create fire in emergency outdoor situations. It maximizes convenience and utility, as the small blade has infinite cutting applications. Moxie Ignite is another camping product that continues the spirit of the Protean Spork in condensing multi-functionality while following a similar design language.
The initial idea was simple. I wanted to look into creating a tool to aid in starting fires during camping trips and came across the strike lighter, with which people generate sparks and ignite kindle.
I appreciated the compactness of the spark force lighter, and how the flint and strike piece inserted into each other. It reminded me of the storm-guard match case that prevented the matches from getting wet/weathering. I decided to investigate how this idea could inform my design.
