Back to the point ....

How Do Prepaid Debit Cards Work?

A prepaid debit card offers a simple solution for consumers. The way these cards work is by essentially allowing the individual to put money on the card. The consumer is given an actual plastic card that looks just like a regular debit card. Depending on where the card is obtained, more information may be included. For example, gift prepaid debit cards can be purchased at stores. This comes packaged with the plastic card, but does not have the cardholder’s name imprinted. The cardholder must still sign the card, but this is the only personally identifying item on the card. These cards are usually intended to be used briefly then discarded, although some are re-fillable.

Some companies offer prepaid debit cards that can link to a permanent account. There are no checks, overdraft protection or other bank provided conveniences included. The account is generally a very simple alternative that may be more appealing to some individuals. These accounts can also be purchased through stores or online and a temporary card is usually provided. Eventually the cardholder will receive a new prepaid debit card that includes their name imprinted on it just like an actual debit or credit card.

Prepaid Debit Card Services

When purchasing a prepaid debit card, the cardholder should be aware of all restrictions and fees. These cards can sometimes be loaded at non-bank locations (such as inside a store or by mail for checks), however there is usually a fee that would not normally be incurred with bank accounts. The load fees will vary from one company to the next. Just like a regular account, prepaid debit card accounts will also be charged fees for using ATMs. Most do not require a fee for point of sale transactions (meaning purchases made at a register).

The cardholder should also be aware of any limitations their prepaid debit card may be subject to. For example, some cards cannot be used at the gas pump. To purchase gas, the cardholder must take their card inside and pay at a register. Others have daily maximums for spending and ATM withdraws that may be different than those offered by a bank. The prepaid debit card offers a simpler way to manage money that might be better for those who can monitor their fees and card usage.
