Open Work
Design & Semiotics Project
Project Goal: To create a range of work that covers the 4 levels of openness stated by Eco in the book titled, The Open Work.
(1) Portrays a high level of meaning from a low amount of information. Work created can only be viewed in one sense. If tranfigured by an "imaginative viewer," it would merely cease to be in the figurative sense.
(2) Portrays a field of possiblities or high level of information with a fixed mark that will lead the viewer to your specific intention. The work will be appreciated and received in the same form as the creater devised it.
(3) Portrays the richest form of communication - where the merest order is created within a context of maximum disorder. For the viewer, this demands a free, invetnive response, that can only be appreciated if the creator sets up a psychological collaboration with the viewer.
(4) Portrays an enjoyable experience for the reader/viewer, in which you allow the viewer to create his or her own interpretation. The viewer's comprehension is modified by his or her particular and individual perspective. The work encourages the viewer's acts of concious freedom.
