Hankey: Week 4 Rhetoric of Photography

The Marvelous Clouds: Toward a Philosophy of Elemental Media by John Durham Peters radically altered my prior notions of what media means.

"Peters defines media expansively as elements that compose the human world. Drawing from ideas implicit in media philosophy, Peters argues that media are more than carriers of messages: they are the very infrastructures combining nature and culture that allow human life to thrive" (https://www.amazon.com/Marvelous-Clouds-Toward-Philosophy-Elemental/dp/022625383X).

My five images for this week’s assignment are from my physical world. Once I saw this world as a largely natural environment, but after reading Peters I began to see man’s mediation in many aspects of this place. I began to explore the visual interest of those often primitive mediations.
