Introducing Game Based Learning (GBL) to the Philippine Curriculum: Gaming as the bridge for better learning
An undergraduate thesis programmed, conceptualized, and researched by Selina Woo Bhang and Marc De Mesa

Learn It Luis is a click-based multimedia supplementary learning material that revolves around the Department of Education-prescribed 3rd grade English curriculum, that involves the use of almost a year’s worth of research behind educational gaming, character study impacts on memory retention among children, and gaming-based learning (GBL). The game’s storyline revolves around Luis, a young boy who wishes to fulfill his hunger for knowledge by delving into the worlds of grammar, reading comprehension, spelling, and the like. By using captivating visuals, smooth interactive gameplay, and interesting storylines, Learn It Luis aims to better the impact of the 3rd grade English curriculum on its students, enabling them to retain the lessons better, eventually leading to a better grasp of the English language and a solid foundation for the literacy of it. The game was inspired by the dramatic rise of NAT scores of 3rd grade students in the English component in the past five years.

To put it simply, Learn It Luis is the culmination of our aspirations to make a difference in the Philippine educational situation.
In creating the thesis, the appearance of its collaterals must hold a sense of invitation and maintain engagement between it and the user. Given the fact that the target audience is known to struggle with short attention spans, the colour scheme must be composed of captivating colors that will attract the user, and have a smooth impact on the eyes. The art style must be similar to that of today’s cartoons, most of which are illustrations that aren’t too heavy on detail, making them easier for the target audience to absorb well enough to be able to draw or replicate on paper in their free time.

Considering that our target users are third grade elementary students, whose ages range from six to nine year olds, we took into account the attention span and focus habits of the children we would be user testing on in the future. The developers took into account that having a simple yet colorful approach that would play on a child’s imagination was a better method than going too formal and serious.
