Soca for Sea Turtles: Branding & Motion Graphics

This is the final mood board of the charity concert, Soca for Sea Turtles set in Port of Spain, Trinidad. Trinidad is a nesting ground for Hawksbill sea turtles, making it the ideal place for the event since soca music originated in Trinidad. I wanted the event to take on the relaxed vibes of the Caribbean and still evoke the vibrancy and passion of the Trinidadian people.
These are the three final sketches chosen for the concert's logo exploration. I wanted to make the sea turtle the star of the logo, making sure that one could mistake what the event was about. I ended up choosing the first logo since the turtle's body placement worked better at the bottom and lended itself well to the motion graphic.
I was initially hesitant in learning about motion graphics because I struggled in previous Flash classes. I chose to keep the animation simple so that it didn't distract from the intended message.
The 5-second motion graphic was created in After Effects. I used a frame rate of 29.97 fps and set the graphic at 1080 x 720px resolution. I used the backwards animation technique and first set the keyframes where the tail, head and fins would be when they finished emerging from the shell. Then, I set the the keyframes earlier in the timeline with the turtle's limbs and head still inside the shell, using the position function animate the movements. I used the transparency function to animate the quick blink of the turtle's eyes.
The 30-second commercial proved to be a challenge. I moved to iMovie when Premier Pro presented some difficulty. I chose to open the video with a similar scene of waves crashing on the shore much like the final mood board. It then moves to an energetic clip of the concert, the performers and closes with sea images and facts before cutting to the animated logo.
