PROVISIONAL FIGURES
Exciting new piece of theatre created by award-winning Portuguese
film and theatre director Marco Martins.
‘Provisional Figures’ is the name used in statistical studies to classify all migrants
whose situation and status is undefined or provisional and who are currently
working in the United Kingdom.
Provisional Figures is the culmination of a two-year project working with Great Yarmouth’s Portuguese community, many of whom moved to the town between 2009 – 2014 to work at the large food processing plants in Norfolk. Taking advantage of the decline of this coastal town, once a favoured holiday resort, plants in the region used accommodation in hotels and semi-abandoned caravan sites to house their new workers.
After working closely in Great Yarmouth with nine inhabitants of various nationalities over several months, the show created is based on the individual testimonials of those who personally experience this period of uncertainty and adjustment. Audiences are invited to reflect on identity and migration issues in an urban context severely hit by the economic crisis and consequent social unrest and exploring the contradictions of human behaviour and the nature of the relationships between men and other animals.
