Odes to common things by Pablo Neruda is a tribute paid to the objects and other inconspicuous components of our everyday lives. This series of books I designed is an attempt to enter into the meaning and sense of everyday things, and translate them into the language of design. How to tell, through the form of a book, about the features and functions assigned to things without falling into literalness; how to show sound, smell, changeability, softness, hunger, passing away, peeling, resting, or eating. In short: how to get to the essence of things?
We need to possess beautiful books. In my opinion, books can be used to create an isolated space, but in their conventional forms as objects we engage with every day, the value of reading as active experience is lost or simply doesn’t exist. I believe everything is hidden in the materiality of the book. We only need an occasion to break the existing mould and bring forth what is within.
In Odes to common things, the physical shape of the book— its conventional and commonly used architecture — stops being something mechanical and external to the content, but results from it and becomes an intentional element. The book symbolically metamorphoses into a thing; the form follows the word and meaning, evoking associations with certain objects and becoming the personification of each thing for the reader. The experience of reading mixes with the aesthetic experience, creating space for contemplation and expanding the area of our feeling and understanding.

Odes to common things (Ody do rzeczy codziennych) Pablo Nerudy, to ukłon w kierunku przedmiotów i innych niepozornych składowych naszej codzienności. Zaprojektowana przeze mnie seria książek to próba wnikliwego wejrzenia w warstwę znaczeniową każdej rzeczy z osobna i przetłumaczenia ich na język projektowania. Jak opowiedzieć językiem plastycznego kształtowania o przypisanym przedmiotom cechach i funkcjach – bez popadania w dosłowność; pokazać warstwowość, dźwięk, zapach, zmienność, miękkość, głód, przemijanie, obieranie, odpoczynek czy spożywanie, dotrzeć do istoty rzeczy?
Mamy potrzebę posiadania pięknych książek. Książki, do których formy przywykliśmy, i w których obsłudze nabraliśmy już biegłości, tworzą w moim odczuciu nieco wyizolowaną przestrzeń. W ich konwencjonalnej i powtarzalnej formie zatraca się wartość czytania jako aktywnego doświadczania. Tymczasem wszystko ukryte jest w materialności książki, potrzeba tylko pretekstu i przełamania funkcjonujących schematów, aby to wydobyć.
W Odes to common things kształt fizyczny książki, jej konwencjonalna i powszechnie stosowana architektura, przestaje być czymś mechanicznym, zewnętrznym w stosunku do treści, ale wynika z niej i stanowi jej zamierzony element. Książka ulega symbolicznej metamorfozie w przedmiot, forma podąża za słowem i znaczeniem, przywołując skojarzenia z konkretnym obiektem i stając się dla czytelnika wcieleniem idei danego przedmiotu. Doświadczenie lektury miesza się z estetycznym doznaniem, stwarzając przestrzeń do kontemplacji i poszerzając płaszczyznę naszego odczuwania.
