Art Nouveau Dissertation

For this project I was asked to take my honors dissertation and turn it into a designed book. My dissertation was about why Art Nouveau has remained a popular style of art since the 1800s. Art Nouveau was a worldwide artistic movement, which came to prominence roughly between 1890 and 1914. Since then it has enjoyed several revivals and has had a lasting impact on the art and design industry. New generations of artists continue to ‘rediscover’ it and use the style as inspiration for all disciplines of art and design.

The final dissertation was over nine thousand words and was designed into a fifty-six-page book. The book was designed to reflect the style of Art Nouveau, with everything from illustrative elements to the dimensions. The portrait layout to the book was chosen to reflect the tall but thin layouts of many Art Nouveau paintings. The design of the borders and the style of typography were also both influenced by Art Nouveau. The borders and style of the graphs by the Art Nouveau stylised use of swirling natural looking linework, and the typography was influenced by Charles Rennie Mackintosh, a designer from my home town of Glasgow.
