COLLECTIVE_SPACE

This project was completed in a 3 week intensive studio as part of the University of Auckland International Architect in Residence program.

The conceptual basis for this project stems from a strong respect for the unique site context – Specifically its distinctive location situated between both city and park.

We willfully chose to accept both aspects of this discourse in order to synthesize them into our gallery – The top of the a park - a timber-clad social hub situated between the site’s existing enormous trees, covered with a lightweight glass roof resembling a tree canopy - and the bottom of the city – a monolithic polished concrete fortress concealing the traditional functions of an art gallery.

Supporting these contrasting spaces is 4 concrete towers. These 4 load-bearing towers support the suspended roof of each space, as well as concealing the services and egress stairs, allowing them to move hidden between the levels.

Between the 4 concrete towers sits a 5th, a void that holds a tree marking the center of the gallery and social space, connecting the two and providing a visual marker for the occupants.

Walking through the top park-like space frames a view to the clock tower – situated at the end of its axis, the park looking towards the city, while the bottom city-like space frames a view into the park.
