BASKET hostel for homeless women and children

Summary: BASKET is a hostel for homeless women and children, where visitors sleep in prefabricated hexagonal-shape units fixed on the exterior facade of the host building. Inside there is a basketball court for all the kids and young adults from around the city to play at. The idea is to connect those who have a home with those who are less fortunate in basketball - because, while in the game, everyone is equal. Special gratitude goes to the Fram Lab for the groundbreaking HOMED solution, as well as to NIKE Hypercourt project and Arturo Torres for fantastic illustrations.
CONCEPT BOARD
PLANS nad LIGHTING SCHEME
HOMED, the modules fixed on facades of the building, is a proposal by Fram Lab architecture studio that capitalised on the vertical land of buildings, whereby the hexagon-shaped housing modules in conjunction with scaffolding create a second layer on top of empty walls. This forms clusters of suspended neighbourhoods of shelters for the city's less fortunate.
NIKE Hypercourts is a great example of business collaborating with community by creating vibrant basketball courts in tough neighbourhoods and giving access to sports to both kids and adults.

By placing a court as cool as the one by NIKE, BASKET becomes a sports arena in Dublin, where basketball Leagues can host their games. This building serves a great social cause and, at the same time, is attractive to the community. This is a place where different society layers meet and connect, because while in the game everyone is equal.
The lack of windows to let the light in is compensated by a large amount of light coming through the roof that is made of a metal construction and glass.
The building has a commercial kitchen to provide food for the visitors, 3 class rooms for the educational purposes, a creche, sick-bay, doctor's area, changing rooms, as well as staff area, and a library located in the sleeve, overhanging the facade on the east.
The sleeve, overhanging the east facade, hosts a library, a leisure area, as well as a vertical garden, located on the top level. The entrance to the space is from the recreation space, located on the second floor of the main structure.
The lighting scheme overhanging the basketball court is inspired by the location site in The Foo Fighters video "The Pretender".
