Practical Ways To Help Immigrant Families
Integrating an immigrant family into a society not only improves their lives and benefits the community.  Although according to the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, immigrant families may find it difficult to assimilate themselves and eventually achieve self-sufficiency and prosperity because of economic and social hurdles, such as lack of access to education, training, and support services.

Federal and private organizations help these families through programs and interventions, but even regular citizens can provide them assistance.  Here are some ways:

Be a cultural companion:  One of the biggest challenges immigrants face, which increases their vulnerability to exclusion, is learning the culture of their new home.

Cultural companions help by visiting the refugee family regularly to build friendships, offer practical advice, familiarize them with culture and customs, teach them and practice with them the local and/or official language, and more.

Assist in pro bono legal services:  Immigrants have limited access to legal support, but some law firms provide free services to them.  Those who can translate or have experience in the field, even without a juris doctor degree can assist in various tasks.

Provide foster care for children:  It is common to see refugee and immigrant children with no parent or guardian.  Volunteers can work with institutions that provide foster care services so that these young individuals receive the shelter, security, and sustenance they need.
