The Prism of Language

The Challenge

People are not usually aware of the conceptual system and the majority of the little things we do every day in our language. We do these things automatically without consciously making decisions.

Inform and entertain the reader to celebrate the unknown features of the English Language.

The Solution

A pack containing a book and four concertina booklets that use the behaviours of light to represent the characteristics of the metaphor as they shift from live to dead over time. Metaphors reflect, copying the characteristics of another concept and refract, gradually shifting in meaning as they become engrained within our language. Holes are punched into the pages to create paths of light to allow shadows to be formed as the pages are turned. Text is reflected or refracted when it reaches the spine in the book or fold on the poster to represent the changes that happen to metaphors. The pattern of the holes is inspired by the path formed when light is refracted through a prism. As the user progresses through the book, the line of dots moves clockwise, creating a chapter navigation system.
