Bletchley Park: AR documentary reading experience

Statement This project turns a documentary of personal accounts from secret World War Two Bletchley Park codebreakers, into an augmented reality reading experience. Marrying printed matter, with digital features. This allows the reader to engage with written text and also to connect audibly to the speaker, or newsreel. Another experience aside from audio and video is the use of augmented reality to decipher a message. This is designed to provide the reader with the joy of discovery, revealing and deciphering messages themselves as the read. The original documentary content is by Nova.

Method This project began editorially led, I started with InDesign. Experimenting with type hierarchy, colour, and bitmap half-tone images (which I created using Photoshop). Meanwhile I was also experimenting with installing laser cut letters as hanging pieces, projecting the original Nova documentary footage over the top. I extracted the footage I felt most effective, this included personal accounts and newsreels. I then used Animate to create encrypted messages as animations. All videos and animations I then programmed into the design using HP Reveal augmented reality software. These experiences are identified in the book through a key coding system.
