The Varsity Fall Magazine: The Futures Issue

The Varsity Magazine is a semi-annual publication for the University of Toronto student body and surrounding community, with this issue's theme being “futures”. The goal of the cover was to playfully encapsulate both the contents of the magazine as well as the theme into a cohesive illustration. The missing keys represent the mystery and uncertainty shrouded in what the future has in store — much like the anxieties and fragilities surrounding life as a student.

Each issue is surrounded by a singular theme. Now in its 11th volume, the theme "Futures" was explored throughout the magazine via written, photographic, and illustrative submissions across the student body. All work is original.
The font selection was chosen in correspondence with the playful imagery found throughout the cover and inside pages to make the future appear bright, versus the anxieties and pessimism students and non-students alike tend to carry with the idea of the unknown. The goal was to ease these anxieties by making the magazine more approachable.
