Time, when displayed on a round clock, seems to loop around forever and ever. But, with that passing of time, the world is ever changing. Flowers, for one, are no exception. They grow, bloom and wilt as time incessantly flows and as the clock relentlessly ticks each second away. Therefore, I decided to draw flowers for the background of a clock to draw relations between the flow and passage of time and the growth and decay of life.

Time and flowers have always been a large interest of mine, stemming from my favorite authors Maggie Stiefvater and Haruki Murakami. Although this style of outlining is not what I usually do, I was inspired by the simple lines and watercolor backgrounds of the Japanese artist Aofuji Sui.

But the artist in me couldn’t settle for just drawing flowers with watercolors. I’ve always felt that, as an artist, if my art isn’t a metaphor for something else, then I’ve failed with my art. All of my favorite artists and writers incorporate metaphors seamlessly into their art and that is something I’ve aimed for with FLOW-ER.
