STRANGERS in PARADISE - Good Shepard - volume X

For many, Nizwa animal market on Friday's, is merely spectative. But not for 12 years old Mohammad, who attends to the needs of his goats, while his father is in the crowd of many men in white "tistashs" (traditional Omani outfit for man), anxiously observing as animals choreographically escorted to the Soug, the animal Colosseum, where trained sellers accept bidding from the crowd.

The sales heats up, as few of the bulls decide to show how tough they are and charge toward the crowd. Visitors and buyers are not surprised; this happens every Friday and it adds up extra excitement to the event. Cows, bulls, young calf and goats are all escorted one by one to the arena for everyone to see. Some count their money as the price of the animal is stated and some run to the manager of the event for negotiations.

Once purchase is complete, happy customers take their new, somewhat reluctant animal to their cars. Some are dragged, others carried gently on the hands of their new owners.

While his father is back the animal Souq buying a new goat, Mohammad is patiently waiting with his new four legged friends in the back of the truck.

"I love weekends" - says Mohammad - ''i get to hang out with my father".

For Mohammad it's an opportunity to spend time with his father and to learn how to trade.
