In-House Design Work: HarperCollins

As an in-house designer in the children's book division, I create a various array of fun marketing and promotional items utilizing the assets of incredibly talented designers, artists, illustrators and authors.
Essentially, the role of a marketing designer is to deconstruct final artwork* for upcoming (or legacy anniversary) books, and turn them into games, swag, ads (digital and print), book tour giveaways, discussion guides for classrooms and libraries, posters, you name it. It's an amazing way to learn to work within wildly varying styles while keeping within a book or estate's "brand." We work in conjunction with three separate marketing teams: early readers, middle grade, and young adult. I specialize in early readers; a special challenge as picture books provide a wide array of interior art to work with (as opposed to chapter books, which may only include cover art). As far as being a designer goes, it doesn't get much better than creating items that will be impactful toward child development or education, not to mention the sacred place many childhood favorites hold in our hearts.
