URBAN SHADES x INTERFACES

The nine muses are designed to be spread in the urban environment, to build a bridge between museum and city, to rise attention and activate people. They spread questions and information into the urban space. They react on their environment and allow different kind of interactions.

Spreading the smart Urban Interfaces:
At the beginning of each thematic exhibition cycle, the city will be examined to find urban spots or places which are relevant for the urban topic of the exhibition cycle.
These structural manifestations can have different qualities and appearances as long as they have a historical or current, social, political or structural relation to the topic [migration].

First aim is to highlight these spots temporary in the urban environment. Second aim is to reach citizens that may have a connection to these places (and so to the topic) and activate them for a valuable participation.

Connection: Museum + Interfaces:
Main job of the nine Urban Interfaces is to build a informative and sensitive bridge between the museum and the city:

The purpose of these smart “particles” is to spread auditive questions, developed in the museum, into the urban space, to rise attention, awareness and reflection of the citizens. Transferred movements from the museum’s interior create a lively surface, which also can be used as an interface to get detailed information about the topic [migration] and the specific urban space they are located in.

Emission + Absorption:
In addition to the absorption of movements and sounds (which create an immersive bridge to the inside of the museum) the bodies of the muses can be opened during the day and allow a semi-private space for active citizens, who want to participate and answer questions on the spot with their personal story, without downloading or using the smartphone app.

Different spatial options:
Different locations need different qualities: Some of the urban satellites can be opened widely and create a new, bold, temporary place where the space of the location allows it. These temporary places enable free usage of the population and allow planned activities and workshops to strengthen the connection between people and the places they share. This principle rises the  aim of the community-based participation of the whole concept and gives it another, local quality.

the Urban interfaces after sunset:
Similar to the dependency of the Jewish calender on the moon, also the muses change their mode with the sunset: After the sun goes down and the museum closes, the multifunctional satellites stop to absorb movements and stories from their surrounding and start to intensify their emission while spreading their questions into the nightly urban space.
