Made to Order is a business focused on getting braille and large print high contrast menus into restaurants. By restaurants having these menus, it provides blind and visually impaired customers the ability to be more independent.
For this logo I really wanted to create something that would stick out, especially on large print menus. A struggle in creating this logo that I faced was the audience I was creating it for, both the visually impaired and blind. This made me cautious when picking colors, and is ultimately one of the reasons I decided on the stronger florescent yellow, because for some visually impaired people, that color is easier to see. Additionally, I wanted to incorporate a symbol that tied into food for my client, which ended up being why I added the burger and the yellow outline surrounding the burger, to give the business logo almost a "diner-like" feel.
When doing the type study for this project it was more then the aesthetic appeal and the functionality in the design for the user. I ended up picking a large type family for the Header, Sub-Header, and Body type. All three of which I did a small focus group with a few visually impaired people to narrow down the choices. This is exceptionally important for the Made To Order business when it comes to creating their large print, high contrast menus.
The images above are slides for an app the business is looking to develop. The function of this app would be for local businesses to subscribe to have their restaurant on it, and it would provide the menu of that restaurant, (and any additional contact info) to that blind or visually impaired individual. Idealistically, this app would have a voice function (hence the microphone) that would help navigate, but more importantly, many smart phones have a voice animated system in place for blind individuals and it would work with that feature. This would be ideal for ordering at a restaurant, but also much more helpful for making a delivery order.
This sticker is made for restaurants who have either subscribed to the app or have purchase and braille and large print menu. Not only is it good publicity for restaurants to have these in their window, but brings awareness to the need for accessibility in restaurants.
