Internal project for University - illustrating the the unique and powerful Invisible Cities by Italo Calvino.
When Polo and Khan are talking about chess, they are really talking about the many cities of Polo's travels. And when Polo is describing the cities, he is really talking about the one city of Venice, his home.
Chessboard-pattern tiles, separated but coming together to form a patchwork of a complete chessboard.
Each tile represents a city, a building block of Polo's story, and each tile is illustrated with a quote from the city's description.
How I saw Calvino's method for Polo's painstaking and respectful approach to broaching the barriers of language, memory and passage of time in describing Venice to the Great Khan.
“Cities, like dreams, are made of desires and fears, even if the thread of their discourse is secret, their rules are absurd, their perspectives deceitful, and everything conceals something else.”
