I was assigned to pick a brand to make hypothetical package designs for a line of products in a class at Art Center College of Design. After doing the market research and consumer interviews, I found a viable initiative for a department store brand to make premium male skin care products. Male skin care industry is still at its infancy and one of the research showed that online boutique stores were recording rising sales of premium male skin care products.

H is a hypothetical skin care product line by Barneys New York. The concept was inspired by ocean and water. The letter represents the concept of relating to water. 

I wanted Barneys New York to help save the ocean while elevating itself as a benefit corporation at the same time to claim the notion that luxury can be both desirable and good. The strategy of this project was to endorse a compassionate celebrity to promote these products. Alexander Wang was chosen due to his background of engaging in several charities in the past along with other cultural qualities such as his social media presence, current media image, and physical characteristics that reject trend-driven and idealized male imagery. I believed that he was the perfect candidate to utilize these products as a vehicle to encourage the audience to participate in raising funds that could be used toward relieving ocean pollution while providing a unique male image for contemporary male audience to consume.
Black glass was chosen to be the material of the bottles. It's environmentally sustainable and good for protecting the product inside from sunlight. A unique subsidiary product logo is used for each different product and they are all differentiated by distinct patterns. The patterns made for each product also translate to the design structure of the bottle caps which also helps each product to be differentiated from one another.
Every Barneys New York store is different. With that in mind, a simple and versatile product shelf is developed. Its presence is quiet, yet confident within Barneys New York's retailing environment. The product display panel on the top is also detachable for some retailing stores where products are displayed in or on top of the glass countertops.
The display panel is integrated with smart surface technology. When the customer picks up one of the products on the panel, the sensor attached to the bottle and panel react and display the information of the product being held along with appropriate motion graphics to make the experience more immersive.
A mobile application can be used with H products. All the products are dispensed by using pumps. This was to reduce the product from coming in contact with other parts of the body, but also incorporate a system in which the mobile application educates the user to use the products more efficiently. The mobile application instructs the user to which product to use, when to use, and how much to use. The amount is also sensitive to the local climate and environmental conditions such as temperature and humidity. The application is also loaded with other features such as providing guides to resolve various skin troubles and skin condition record.
