Baking the mould.

This brief required me to write my own brief in which I had to carefully research and select an area or subject that I feel passionately about. I decided to make this personal and focus the brief on my struggle with giving my opinion and using this project as a way of getting my thoughts and opinions on what interests me, out there.

Originally, I planned on designing and making graphic props with my opinions and quotes that inspire me. But as my idea developed, I ended up illustrating my props instead. I designed a recipe book around the illustrations. I chose to display my illustrations in a recipe book format as it shows people another aspect of me which I don't usually talk about - baking.

Each ingredient is a metaphor which focuses on a different topic that interests me and an illustrated action follows each ingredient such as the sieve and paint splatters. Some of the larger paint splatters are used to highlight important words throughout the book. The quotes which are labelled on each of the ingredients are quotes from writers who I admire and share similar opinions to. The 'x's' represent my discomfort at sharing my thoughts and this is a theme which runs through the book.

I experimented with several different illustration styles for this brief. I also researched and experimented with hand lettering. I wanted to convey my opinions in a colourful and humorous way which is why I used a bright colour palette for the recipe book.

In November 2017, this book was shortlisted for an Institute of Designer's of Ireland Graduate Award for Use of Illustration in Design.
