Концентрационный лагерь и лагерь смерти Освенцим был освобождён 27 января 1945 года войсками 59-й и 60-й армий 1-го Украинского фронта под командованием Маршала Советского Союза И.С. Конева во взаимодействии с войсками 38-й армии 4-го Украинского фронта под командованием генерал-полковника И.Е. Петрова в ходе Висло-Одерской операции.
Auschwitz concentration and extermination camp was liberated by the troops of the 59th and 60th armies of the 1st Ukrainian Front under the command of Marshal of the Soviet Union I.S. Konev in collaboration with the troops of the 38th Army of the 4th Ukrainian Front under the command of Colonel-General I.E. Petrov during the Vistula-Oder operation on 27 January 1945.
Освенцим стал главным символом Холокоста. Генеральная Ассамблея ООН назначила 27 января, дату освобождения лагеря, Международным днем памяти жертв Холокоста.
In the decades since its liberation, Auschwitz has become a primary symbol of the Holocaust. The United Nations General Assembly has designated 27 January, the date of the camp's liberation, as International Holocaust Remembrance Day.
