ILFFPS Teaches Emergency and Fire Service Personnel

For more a decade, Jerry Marzullo has been practicing law in Illinois. A graduate of Loyola University Chicago School of Law, he practices labor law as a founding partner at Puchalski Goodloe Marzullo, LLP, in Berwyn. Dedicated to helping his Berwyn-area community, Jerry Marzullo serves as general counsel and vice president of the Illinois Firefighter Peer Support (ILFFPS) network.

A nonprofit organization, ILFFPS helps emergency responders and fire service professionals find the support they need when dealing with such issues as anxiety, nervousness, and panic.

According to the organization, nervousness, panic, and anxiety are three different things. Anxiety is a long-lasting emotion that lasts beyond a particular event or difficult point in life. It affects relationships, work, and other aspects of a person’s life. Meanwhile, nervousness appears during a difficult period or after an event and eventually goes away, and panic is associated with anxiety and may progress to an “attack.” These issues are often signified by a sense of impending doom, an increased heart rate, and trembling in the body and hands.

ILFFPS makes sure to note that many of the symptoms associated with anxiety, nervousness, and panic are also associated with some medical issues. These issues include a B-12 deficiency and heart disease. Due to this overlap, it’s important that fire service and emergency personnel rule out any medical issues before treating their anxiety and nervousness.
