RED SIGNAL - Traffic Accident Experience Interactive Device

Accidents take place frequently in Taiwan, which caused an average of 4.5 people dies each day. However, lots of modern propagandas of traffic safety are charts or data. It just lack some senses of reality and closeness for most people. Hence, the interactive design called “RED SIGNAL” that imitates car crashes and the life after death was created. The interactive design combines virtual reality, 360°video and hardware. In art settings, it simulates Taiwan’s actual streets and strengthens the sense of reality after the cross-domain combination. Hoping that through the design, the experimenters can feel the dread of car crashes and take traffic safety more seriously.

Design motivation

Car crashes take place frequently and it causes an average of 4.5 deaths each day in Taiwan. The main causes were drunk driving, paying no attention to surroundings, passing cars without following traffic rules. All the causes above can be avoided by drivers themselves. Hence, we used VR to design the car crash experiencing device to let drivers realize the seriousness of car crashes and strengthen their self-discipline.

Design point

Lots of modern propagandas of traffic safety are charts or data. It just lack some senses of reality and closeness for most people. As a result, we decide to use VR for carrying out our design and combine 360° video with interactive device in order to strengthen the interactions and the sense of reality. We believe our experimenters can fully feel the dread and consequences which car crashes can bring.
