Set Design for Twilight Tales

Set Design for Twilight Tales
The real world in Twilight Tales was created as a physically built set. I built the set so the walls could be removable for certain angle shots I wanted. The blankets, cushions and curtains were sewn. Wardrobe and bed created with cardboard and clay and the drawings and some of the toys made such as the little castle on the shelf.
Bedroom Scene:
This is the intro shot which had a forest scene put into the green-screened area, the child character added in and lighting and shadows edited into.
Shooting of the Set:
Some of the photographs taken from the set which then had the characters and animations composited into them.
Pre-visualisation of the set:
I first worked out the proportions of the room in 3Ds Max then did two prototypes in cardboard and mounting board. The hallway scene was later discarded leaving the focus solely on the bedroom then.
Prop Making and Fabric decisions:
I created a bed and wardrobe with cardboard and clay. The bed has a tree detail on the headboard, foreshadowing the part the talking tree plays in the animation. I sewed loads of cushions and bedding for the room with fabric that had small enough designs/details to suit the size of the room. I then made a mouse/teddy with some of the excess fabric for the bed.
The wallpaper (wrapping paper) was chosen because its colour complimented the bed fabric and the butterflies in the detail were a good size again for the overall room size. It was glued and stretched onto the sized and cut wall. The wood panelling on the roof/wall and the skirting board I cut and carved from wood and mounting board and then painted. It was to help make the room seem more solid and real.
Sketchbook research:
Research on the fabric and look of the room as I tried to figure out the full look. I ended up finding a lovely plastic bamboo wallpaper that looked like a wood floor in comparison to the scale of the room which greatly influenced overall style. Pink appeared alot in the scheme as I had my sister in mind, for what she would like in her room.
