Bitumen Mural - The Salty Dog Hotel, Tasmania

The Salty Dog Hotel is a beachside motel, built in the early 1970’s, refurbished and reborn as a contemporary coastal experience just south of Hobart, Tasmania. Located directly across from Kingston Beach, the bar consists of three main spaces – front bar and dining, back bar, and an incredibly large beer garden.

I was commissioned to introduce the community to a fourth space, in the form of a hand-painted bitumen mural in the front courtyard.

Bitumen Mural + Lettering Design + Illustration
The Salty Dog Hotel is the perfect reawakening of the suburban hotel that shares a pride of place with the local community. A strong reference to natural elements from the beach and the hotels surrounds proved to be a good addition to the design.

The mural was created to quickly invite people from the beach to interact and enjoy different areas of the lettering and abstract shapes within the design. It reflects the many colours and shapes seen in the elegant 1970’s inspired hotels bar and restaurant interior. The lettering within the design matches the different styles of signage dotted around the venue with abstract shapes depicting the hotels surrounding natural environment.
