THE ISOTOPE LAMP

2010 - Made by Mikkeline Daa Natrop and I for the KEPS 2010 comptetition.

Prototype lamp for competition
We wanted to make a wooden lamp look like a cristal. It had to assemble and disassemble without tools. We wanted it to be simple yet look intricate. We had only three days.

Idea
A lamp made as an interpretation of the iconic diamond-shape. The caracteristic surfaces of the diamond dissapers but reemerges in the negative space of the structure. The structure makes the light spread out in a fragmented pattern coherent with the pattern made by light passing through a diamond.

Concept
The construction appears complex but consists of only three diffrent shapes. The use of only few shapes makes it easy to assemble yet helps communicate the complexity of the diamond-shape. Due to the use of precise laser cutteing the lamp can be assembled and disassembled without the use of glue or tools. A single elastic band holdes the lamp together.

Function
The lamp functions as ambient lightning. It is made to lay on the floor casting light and shadow across the floor, wall and cieling. The sculptural appreance of the lamp is enhanced by the light. The top of the lamp is an unopstructed eight-sided space that emits a more uniform body of light.
