Beginning
Victoria is my university final work. In the beginning, we had a question about why the products need appearence design. To find the answer, we researched the history of industrial design, and we found a interesting thing. There are many similar concept between products’ appearence and humans’ clothing. For instance, they all be created from functions. However, after thousand of years they have became one of our culture, and they were also important parts of our daily life. If a woman wear skimpy outfits, like bikini, we will think that it’s sexy. Similarly, the heavy motorcycle were coverd a little case, because human wanted to show its elaborate engine. It also mean sexy to many people.

Morden dance
We decided to present our concept with an ordinary product, chair. We gave the chair gender female identity, and we wanted this chair an elegant lady. It didn’t mean that the chair would become a real human, it’s just a figure of speech. We choose female rather than male, because female body curves and their relationship with clothing are batter the male. Thus, we asked the modern dancer dance for us, and we catched their body curves when they were dancing. These curves became our chair’s original line, finally.
Transition of the curves
We started to translate the original curves. First, we simplified these curves, and then we picked sexy curves to translate into drafts of Victoria. At the same time, we decided to devided the chair into two parts. One was the body, and another was leg. We wanted Victoria simulate the real human body.
More details
We made the rough models with clay‚ PU, and modeling clay. With the models, we started to build the 3D surface of Victoria. We found the best proportion from again and again experiments, and turned the result into skatch rendering.
3D scannig technology
We scanned the rough model with the 3D scanning technology. As for the chair leg, we built the 3D model with the 3D software. Finally we combined the body with the leg in the 3D software, and adjusted the proportion of two parts.
Ergonomics test
In the process of making the chair, we constantly tested the comfort of the chair. Due to Victoria’s complicated surface, we had to make sure that the shape of chair wouldn’t make user uncomfortable.

Vedio about the process of making

Process of the making chair body
For the strength of the chair, we used glass fiber to be material of the chair body. First, we cut many pieces of styrofoam and glued them together. Second, we sculptured it, and covered multiple layers of glues on the surface. It could protect styrofoam from erosion. Finally, before painting, we had a perfect polish work.

Cooperate with the Artisan
We cooperated with the sophisicated artisan to finish the chair leg together. We provided the 3D printing model and dimension drawing, and he assisted us with his amazing technique. Finally, we had a strength and precision chair leg. Furthermore, we applied metal coating in the chair leg. The technique made the chair leg be similar to metal. And I have to say this effect is quiet brilliant.

There are various angles of Victoria’s pictures. You can find the shape of hourglass in any view of Victoria. By this way, we hope it can achieve the best balance of vision.
We named the high chair Victoria.
With the work, we wanted to discuss the relationship between products’ appearence and humans’clothing. They were similar concepts. However we could change our clothing to enter other occasions, the product couldn’t. Different occasion need particular furnitures or products. I thought it was very interesting. I wanted to change point of view to thought about that.

Wedding gown
We made the dried flowers with the fresh roses. Dried flower was the topic of the wedding gown. As for fabric, we used lace and gauze to make a modern and multiple wedding gown. Victoria in the gown were proper to appear at the outdoor wedding occasion.
Europe evening gown
We used the exaggerated craft to present the gown. We magnified the pleat, and turned it into an enormous decoration. With the gown, Victoria were like a model staying on the catwalk. It were porperly worn in fashion restaurants or occasions.
Chinese cheongsam
We designed the cheongsam in reference to 1980s Shanghai style. Dragon and phoenix were the classcial elements of chinese culture, and they both were printed on the cheongsam. Nevertheless, we decorated the cheongsam with the block wool.
