Trend of design

There were many innovative tecnologies and softwares that popped up in recent years. The trend of design has changed, many companies and designers, even engineers have applied AI(artificial intelligence) or other innovative tecnologies in industrial design. Thanks to these techniques, engineers and designers could accerlate the process of productions. Nevertheless, maybe one day, AI can design by itself without any assistance from human. To follow the trend, I have to learn how to design with these innovative softwares. Different from other works, Bionic was my first work that relied on softwares. Undoubtedly, It was a big challenge to me.

Organism

With the progrem, Grasshoper, I created many shapes that I couldn’t figure out by myself. They were pretty awesome. However, I naturelly associated these shapes with the seabed creatures. For instance, corels, they have unstable shapes, they would changed their shapes when the circumstance were different. Thus, I brought the elements of ocean into this work.

Parametric design

Grasshoper is a plug-in of Rhino. You can bulid many controllers in this program. By adjusting the parameters of controllers, you can get different shapes of models. Thus, I could use the way to create a lot of shapes, and then chose my favorite one to continue this work. Maybe, you will say that I didn’t have any contributions to designing the shape. Well, I agree that without any hesitation.

Material

The materials were devided into two parts. One was Acrylic, and the other was Nickel plated steel. Acrylic represented water, and steel meant rock. They were both elements of ocean. I hoped its appearence was clear just like ocean. However, when these two different materials arranged together, it would create particular effect just like spray.

Magnet

I put magnets into every pieces of Acrylic, so the pieces of Acrylic could combine the pieces of Nickel plated steel. It was a simple princible about magnetic attraction.

Experimental work

Bionic is a experimental work. By following the trend as a start, I put many bold elements inside the work. It has a special shape, cool texture composition and particular way to open it. Bionic can storage some small items. Furthermore, if I can magnify it, I believe that it will be a great furniture or installment art.

Clasp

Accidentally, the unique shape is good to take, and it has an awesome touch. The feeling is like touching the seabed creatures, like sea cucumber. However, Bionic is composed of a half of material, it’s a little bit heavy.

Use

Bionic is a multipurpose container. You can put your office items inside it, or make it a decoration on your table. If you want more differences, it can be your pencil box. Absolutely, it must catch everyone’s eyes.
