4’33’’ is John Cage’s most famous and controversial piece. It was composed in 1952 for any instrument.
The brief required us to create our own version of John Cage’s piece using sounds from a certain place or time to create a visual based response to the sounds that surround us through type.

To try and relate my project to John Cage's original piece, i wanted to focused on sounds we don't hear. This is when i decided to record the sounds whilst asleep. Below are the books i completed for the task each relating to certain sounds on the 4'33" recording.

book 1 focused on the snoring
book 2 focused on the clock in the room
and book 3 focused on the ambient sounds or movements in the house.

the three books. all white to represent the lack of sound we hear when asleep
cover for book 1
the inside of each book was filled with black, blank pages that hid the text inside the folds.
(small cross section) size of the text is in relation to how loud it was on the recording. the sounds are all placed in order so you can match up all the books and sounds at a specific time.
